چکیده

We report the result of an on-going survey for 22 GHz H2O maser emission towards infrared luminous galaxies. The observed galaxies were selected primarily from the IRAS bright galaxy sample. The survey has resulted in the detection of one new maser. The new maser was discovered towards the [U]LIRG/merger galaxy NGC6240, which contains a LINER nucleus. This is the first detection of an H2O maser towards this class of galaxy, they are traditionally associated with OH megamaser sources. The detected maser emission is highly redshifted (∼ 260–300 km s) with respect to the adopted systemic velocity of the galaxy, and we identified no other significant emission at velocities <∼ ± 500 km s −1 relative to the systemic velocity. The presence of highvelocity maser emission implies the possible existence of a rotating maser disk formed in the merging process. The large maser luminosity (∼ 40 L⊙) suggests that an active galactic nucleus could be the energy source that gives rise to the water emission. Alternatively, the maser emission could be associated with the previously observed double radio source in the centre of the galaxy. Interferometric observations with high angular resolution will be able to clarify the origin of the new maser.

Observations of extragalactic H2O masers in bright IRAS sources

We report the first results of an ongoing survey at 22GHz with the 100-m Effelsberg telescope to search for water maser emission in bright IRAS sources. We have detected water vapor emission in IC 342. The maser, associated with a star forming region ∼10–15 west of the nucleus, consists of a single 0.5 km s wide feature and reaches an isotropic luminosity of 10 L⊙ (D=1.8Mpc). Our detection rais...

Extragalactic water masers in bright IRAS sources

We report the results of a search for 22GHz water maser emission in IRAS-bright galaxies, using the 100-m Effelsberg telescope. In particular, we present the details of four new maser detections (IC 342, NGC 2146, NGC 3556, and Arp 299) and follow-up interferometric studies. A comparison between water maser detection rates derived in the present study and those in previous similar surveys is al...

Extragalactic H2O masers and X-ray absorbing column densities

Having conducted a search for the λ∼1.3 cm (22GHz) water vapor line towards galaxies with nuclear activity, large nuclear column densities or high infrared luminosities, we present H2O spectra for NGC2273, UGC5101, and NGC3393 with isotropic luminosities of 7, 1500, and 400 L⊙. The H2O maser in UGC5101 is by far the most luminous yet found in an ultraluminous infrared galaxy. NGC3393 reveals th...

A comprehensive search for extragalactic 6.7-GHz methanol masers

We have used the Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA) to search for 6.7-GHz methanol maser emission towards 87 galaxies. We chose the target sources using several criteria, including far-IR luminosities and the presence of known OH megamasers. In addition, we searched for methanol masers in the nearby starburst galaxy NGC 253, making a full spectral-line synthesis image. No emission was dete...

Ubiquitous Water Masers in Nearby Star-forming Galaxies

We report the detection of water maser emission from four nearby galaxies hosting ultradense H II (UDHII) regions, He 2-10, the Antennae galaxies (NGC 4038/4039), NGC 4214, and NGC 5253, with the Green Bank Telescope. Our detection rate is 100%, and all of these H2O “kilomasers” (LH2O < 10 L⊙) are located toward regions of known star formation as traced by UDHII regions and bright 24 μm emissio...
